Activities and Attractions

The Riviera Maya's principal quality is its diversity. In addition to just relaxing on the beach, you can choose from a variety of activities: golf, tennis, adventure sports, jungle tours on foot or horseback, water and nautical sports, and touring the Maya ruins.

Puerto Aventuras is well known for its deep water marina, as it is the only mainland marina facility between Cancun and Belize City. The marina is one of the principal attractions at Puerto Aventuras. Many yachts and other boats are docked at the marina, and the area abounds in restaurants and cafes.

Fishing: Puerto Aventuras is considered one of the top vacation spots among world-class sports fishermen due to the abundance of fish in this area. You can charter boats by the hour or for a day, whether you want to fish or simply cruise the tranquil turquoise waters of the Caribbean Sea.

Dolphin Discovery: Located near the marina, this facility lets you swim with dolphins or manatees, or watch the dolphins and sea lions perform.

CEDAM Museum: This museum exhibits numerous objects rescued from shipwrecks along Mexico’s Caribbean Coast. Located by the main entrance of the commercial center and marina on the second floor of a pink building, it’s open Monday through Saturday all year from 9 AM to 1 PM and from 2:30 PM to 5:30 PM. There is no entrance fee, although donations are always welcome.

Xel-Há and Xcaret: These eco-parks and archeological sites are nearby; Xcaret is North of PA, and Xel-Ha is south. Visitors can enjoy spectacular snorkeling and diving, swimming with dolphins, jungle hikes, and horseback riding. It’s best to get to these parks early and on a weekday to avoid crowds.

Mayan Ruins: Head south to the ancient Mayan city of Tulum, called the "City of the Dawn." The Caribbean Sea provides a striking backdrop to the Mayan ruins as El Castillo, the tallest and most impressive building, sits perched on the edge of a cliff. Other Mayan ruins in the area are Coba and Chichen Itza.

Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve: This 1.5 million-acre park is a safe haven for 350 bird species, and features an extensive coral reef perfect for snorkeling. A small ecotourism and education center, it serves as a model for sustainable development in sensitive tropical ecosystems.

Playa del Carmen: Head north to visit Playa del Carmen's 5th Avenue, which is filled with little cafes, restaurants, and locally owned shops offering everything from Guatemalan clothing to Cuban cigars. Golfers will love the course at Playacar Golf Club. Designed by Robert Von Hagge, this course is carved through the lush Mayan jungle with stunning views of the Caribbean. Playa is also known for its active nightlife, with many unique dance clubs and bars.

Cozumel: Cozumel, an island just 40 miles south of Cancun, has a laid-back, sedate atmosphere and superb fishing, snorkeling, and diving. In addition, Cozumel has many shops and restaurants, as well as lovely isolated beaches. Regular ferry service provides frequent transportation between Playa del Carmen and Cozumel in about 35 minutes. They are air-conditioned passenger ferries with comfortable seating and music videos. Purchase tickets at booths in Playa on 5th Avenue and close to the docks. Depending on which ferry service you use, the cost can range from around $16 to $20 US. Once on the island, taxis are readily available, but you can easily rent a car or scooter if you’d like to explore.
